16th Street Mall – First Block Opening Celebration
Wednesday, June 26th, 2024 was a big day for Downtown Denver. The very first block of our new and improved 16th Street Mall is complete and was officially opened. That block, between Larimer and Lawrence, is tree-lined, with brand new pavers, and is just plain darned beautiful! Several dignitaries were on hand to celebrate including Mayor Johnston, District 10 City Councilman Chris Hinds, Downtown Denver Partnership President Kourtney Garret and several others. UpDoNA was well represented by President Lisa Pope, Director Brent Strausbaugh and Rob Squire.
The mayor opened the festivities, calling the mall the “Spine of Denver”, and congratulating everyone involved in this huge and potentially game-changing improvement in the downtown area.
On the other side, we found a brass band, popups and lots of smiles. Later, we spoke with the mayor, reminding him that we are anxious to see similar openings in the Upper Downtown blocks of the mall.
If you haven’t seen it, swing by and take a look. You’ll be impressed! There will be similar opening celebrations as each new block is completed. The mall has been on schedule for at least the past 9 months, and the plan is for everything up to Tremont to be completely open as we head into summer of 2025.
